They come in twos and threes,
fireworks – splendid as the sun;
red and green, hand in hand
cushioning the black sky.
green goes first, brilliant and bold,
red is smaller but sharper
both turn white together –
reaching to the highest point to fade.
A girl sits by a pier.
The last rays of the sun
reach out as it sets,
out to the twinkle of bright lights.
Pinpricks of twinkling red and green
dancing out of reach
as they move further and further,
going somewhere away and beyond.
The evening star does not glimmer,
she sits contentedly in her black bed.
“The most beautiful”, “the most revered” –
how grand for something lacking lustre.
Her companions twinkle away,
beautiful in flower clusters.
One day they too will burst
and fade, but rest, for that won’t be today.
Yellow balls of light.
Lamps, bulbs, neon signs.
Nestled under a black blanket
commanding attention, all at the same time.
Eternally burning,
eternally grand,
eternally dreaming,
eternally bland.
The dawn before sunrise is darker than anything,
Suga’s interlude – (Halsey ft Min Yoongi of BTS)
but never forget the stars you hope for only appear in the dark.
